Gay participation in 35 targeted races in 27 states across the country demonstrates that the Lesbian and Gay political movement is alive, well and effective in support of DEMOCRATIC candidates NATIONWIDE.

In 62.8% of the targeted races, the Gay endorsed and supported candidates were elected. Two races remain too close to call and in one state, Mississippi, a runoff is required.

The targeted races represent only the tip of the iceberg of Gay political involvement. In each instance, additional candidates have also received the endorsement and support of the local Lesbian and Gay community. And, at the national level, the non-partisan Human Rights Campaign Fund contributed financially to 118 House and Senate campaigns.

While Gay political victories in San Francisco, Houston and Washington, DC have finally been recognized and recorded by the media, the steady development of Gay political activity nationwide in Oregon and Nebraska, Arkansas and Illinois has gone almost totally unnoticed and unreported.

In Minnesota, an openly Lesbian legislator, Karen Clark, just won reelection to her seat in the State House while her openly Gay colleague in the State Senate, Alan Spear, was

reelected to his third term, as well. In Washington state, an openly gay candidate for the State House won a strong primary victory and ran a tough but unsuccessful campaign in one of the Istate's most conservative areas.

In Missouri's 5th Congressional District, an openly Gay volunteer staff member worked full time on Alan Wheat's successful campaign and COordinated Gay community support. In Oklahoma City, an openly Gay campaign manager helped incumbent State Representative Rebecca Hamilton to win reelection in the 89 district..

In Texas, the statewide network Lesbian and Gay Democrats of Texas worked and contributed toward the elections of the new State Treasurer and State Agriculture Commissioner. In New England, Congressional candidates Barney Frank and Bruce Morrison received Gay support when most experts dismissed their campaigns. Both were elected.

The targeted races also. demonstrate the Lesbian and Gay community's commitment to the overall struggle for civil rights for all Americans. Fiftyfour percent of the races listed, were women or minority candidates.

The National Association of Gay and Lesbian

Democratic Clubs, which coordinated. this efffort, is building on the success of the 86 member Lesbian and Gay Caucus at the 1980 Democratic National Convention. Toward this

goal, the National Association works with thirty Gay Democratic Clubs and several dozen bi-partisan and non-partisan Gay political groups across the country.

Targeted Races 1982

Gay participation in the following 35 races in 27 states demonstrates conclusively that the Lesbian and Gay political movement is alive, well and effective in support of DEMOCRATIC candidates NATIONWIDE. The information, which was provided by local clubs and activists, is drawn from a longer list of locally. targeted priorities. Additional Congressional races have been targeted by the non-partisan Human Rights Campaign Fund (546-2025).
